Improving the Sustainability, Stability, Reliability, and Predictability of ILIAS Through Simplification
Time and room: | 14:00 – 14:30 | Audimax B
Presented by | Yvonne Seiler, Stephan Kergomard
Summary | ILIAS is huge and offers a lot of functions that most people in most scenarios do not need. Additionally, many componenents have settings for everything. The test, for example, can show many different screens at its end that are partially redundant and have to be enabled in different sections of the settings. On many platforms WebDAV is deactivated and most people will never use "360° Surveys", "Learning Objectives-Driven Courses", "Personal and Shared Resource" and many other features. This is especially consequential in settings where stability, reliability, and predictability are front and centre, e.g. when running exams, but in a more general way, it decreases the security of the system for everyone by increasing its attack surface and the complexity of the code. Additionally, it also increases the cost of maintaining the system as more code means more work.
