Call for Papers 2024

Call for Papers

We would like to invite all ILIAS users, and all those who are interested in e-learning generally, to actively help shape the programme for the 23rd ILIAS Conference. Submit your programme contributions, your knowledge, know-how and expertise, and share it with your ILIAS colleagues and friends.

The slogan for this year's conference is "Hand in hand - growing together".

We would like to encourage you to play an active part in the exchange of knowledge by sharing your experiences and insights with other participants, and learning from them in turn. The conference is also a great platform for networking, discussion and the joint development of new ideas. We want you to use the conference to shape the future, hand in hand.

Regardless of whether you are new to ILIAS or an experienced user, we look forward to every contribution that gets conversation going and helps contribute to the further development of ILIAS and its community. Help us create an inspiring conference!

The call has ended in the meantime. The jury is currently evaluating all submissions and preparing a programme. It will be available mid-May.

Key Topics of the 23rd ILIAS Conference in Graz (AT)

Learning Together in ILIAS - Chances and Challenges

The education sector is characterised by constant change. Over the last couple of decades, digital learning has established itself as a core part of the education system. Digital education offers many advantages such as flexibility, the possibility of learning at individual speeds and the ability to access knowledge and resources from around the whole world. But one aspect of learning is often missing: learning together with other people.

In order to meet these requirements, it is important to utilise digital collaboration tools and strategies on the one hand, and to promote the necessary skills that enable the social aspect of teaching and learning on the other.

Which new or additional challenges have you noticed when it comes to teaching and learning? What competences and skills are needed in order to work together effectively in a digital learning setting? How can these be acquired?

Have you already discovered and implemented any approaches in the area of social learning? Which features of ILIAS that encourage/require digital collaboration do you already use? What feedback have you received, for example from your learning communities? Which usage scenarios form a part of your work? What role does mobile learning play? What about the desire and/or need for virtual collaboration, for example in virtual meeting rooms? Conceivable or fantasy - ILIAS goes VR/AR/XR?

We are excited to hear about your experiences, ideas and approaches!

ILIAS in Action: User Stories for the Community

Have you always wanted to share your experiences and your special solutions that make ILIAS even better? This is your opportunity to share your "aha" moments with the community!

How have you made your ILIAS more user friendly? Which innovative designs and templates have you developed to make ILIAS even more attractive? How do you make your ILIAS even more inclusive?

We are interested in your achievements - whether big or small - achievements that you want to share with the ILIAS community. With your submission, you will be playing your part in the continuing further development of ILIAS.

Innovative solutions and useful tips and tricks are often the result of the collaborative creativity of different minds. We are looking for multipliers who can share their ILIAS experiences and thereby enrich the whole community. Your experience, your tweaks could be exactly what someone else in the community is looking for!

Learning ILIAS

ILIAS, as we know and love it, is impressive with its wide range of functions, extensive individual design options and endless interfaces for connecting with other programmes. With such a wealth of functions, options, views and the overall "heftiness" of the installation, user onboarding becomes a really important building block for a successful ILIAS installation.

We are looking for your onboarding concepts for both learners and teachers in ILIAS, using ILIAS. Which concepts do you use to get your teachers and authors onto ILIAS? How do you get participants of short-term training courses to use ILIAS? How do you liaise with international participants and partner universities that use your installation? What do you require your ILIAS users to have in terms of knowledge and competences, and which are made available?

With a submission, you have the opportunity to present your own solutions and offer other conference participants inspiration for their own onboarding concepts.

Wildcard

The wildcard is a format in which you can present innovations, prototypes, new trends or research papers. This is the place for exciting developments and new ideas that will enrich the ILIAS landscape.

Maybe you would like to tell us about something that doesn't really fit into any of the other conference key topics? If so, the wildcard format is for you - it is your chance to share your ideas and innovations with the community.

Information for Submissions

Workshop (90 mins)

The workshop format is about exploring a particular topic together with the participants, exchanging ideas and developing concrete results. It is especially important that all participants are actively involved in the workshop, as their perspectives and experiences form an important part of this format and will prove useful to the community.

Workshops give the community the possibility to engage in an intensive dialogue, exchange opinions and generally provide new impetus. In this format, ideas can be presented, discussed and developed further. The results will be made available to the community after the conference and will be an active contribution to the further development of ILIAS.

So, what types of workshops can be submitted?

  • Workshops with a scientific focus: Discuss the preliminary results of research into current, but no yet widely established trends. Work together to develop new perspectives.

  • Idea Workshops: Present an idea, discuss it with other participants and work together on its further development.

  • Project Workshops: Compare the results of projects, discuss your experiences and, together, find solutions to concrete questions.

We we would be delighted if you could actively contribute your expertise in the form of a workshop.
No presentations please!

BarCamp (120 mins)

At this year's conference, we would like to give your wishes and needs even more space and will therefore be offering a BarCamp session for the first time.

The BarCamp format will work like this: You'll decide on two topics from the list of suggested topics published in the programme booklet and start in the room corresponding to your choice. After 40 minutes of working together, keeping in mind the goal of the person who submitted the topic, you will switch to your second topic. You'll also have 40 minutes for this, in order to tackle the issue at hand together. The results of the various topics will then be presented by the presentation team in a 30-minute plenary session, so that the total time of the BarCamp, including the planned breaks for room changes, will be 120 minutes.

Which questions or ideas would you like to work on and/or discuss with the ILIAS community? What would you like to share and exchange? Are you facing a new challenge and would like to hear the opinions and experiences of the community?

Then please submit a topic that can be covered in a 40-minute time slot. Please set a goal for your topic in line with the S.M.A.R.T criteria, and prepare a short introduction to your topic as well as be ready to lead the discussion.

We look forward to an exchange of ideas from across ILIAS landscape!

Presentation  (30 mins)

We are looking for motivated ILIAS fans who would like to present their knowledge and experience to the community. Whether you have particular expertise in your field or innovative ideas and fresh perspectives that you would like to tell us about, we would be delighted for you to share this with the community. Your contribution will not only help make the conference a success, but will also lead to enriched discussion and help other participants gain new insights.

If you would like to submit a presentation, then please be aware of the following format guidelines:

Presentations should last 30 minutes, including a 5 to 10 minute question and answer session / discussion.

Hands-on Tutorial (90 mins)

A hands-on tutorial should give a comprehensive overview of a thematically self-contained subject area, method or tool. A good tutorial should be educational and not just be a brief overview.

Tutorials should contain practical exercises enabling participants to gain hands-on experience, and should be of sufficient relevance and importance to capture the interest of the audience.

Contributions can be submitted in English and/or German. Simultaneous translation will be provided in some cases on site.

The sustainable transfer of the knowledge presented in all of the contributions is important to us. If you agree, we would like to record your presentation and make it available on the ILIAS Society’s Youtube channel. Then even those who won't be able to make it to the ILIAS conference in Graz will be able to benefit from your contribution.

Programme Committee of the ILIAS Conference 2024

In 2024, the programme of the ILIAS conference will once again be designed and managed by a programme committee made up of members of the community. Together with representatives of the organising team and the ILIAS Association, the programme committee will also form the jury for the call for papers. The members of the programme committee are:

  • Eva Unterlechner
  • Karim Sayed
  • Kenji-T. Nishino
  • Lars Ewald
