ILIAS @ Generali: From Learning Management to Training Management with ILIAS

Kruse, Fabian [Fabian] - 15. Aug 2016, 11:00

In the series  ILIAS @ home  we like to use our blog to introduce you to new and veteran users of ILIAS and show you how they use the software and help to make it even better as part of the ILIAS community. Today we are going to take a look at how ILIAS is used at Generali Insurance.

Businesses face the challenge of having to provide training quickly, efficiently and in a manner tailored to the target group, which is often made more difficult by the fact that the businesses are in many cases decentrally organised. The prerequisites to offer 'training on demand' keep growing. Processes need to be optimised, the administration needs to be streamlined. The worlds of e-learning and face-to-face training, which were previously often separated from each another, have to be combined and administered in one single system.

Thomas Marschall, Head of the department 'Education Management, Online Coaching and Special Training' at Generali

This is exactly the challenge that was faced by Generali Insurance. To address it, Generali has been relying on ILIAS since 2014. The 'Generali Online Academy', which is built upon ILIAS, is today the company's central qualification platform. It is aimed at both employed and self-employed field staff, as well as independent sales partners. This target group consists of over 19,000 people across Germany with a whole range of different backgrounds, knowledge levels and needs. Together with the ILIAS premium partner CaT Concepts and Training GmbH, Generali has been able to tailor their system to these specific needs.

Specialists and trainers are able to interact directly with their target group. Training units can be planned and carried out decentrally. For the head of the department Education Management, Online Coaching and Special Training, Thomas Marschall, an important feature is the huge increase in the transparency of Training Management.

The ILIAS-based Generali Online Academy today regulates Training Management for all distribution channels. This includes the following functions:

  • Representation of the complete educational programme
  • Ability for staff or their supervisors to book the various elements themselves – whether face-to-face seminars or webinars or web-based training units.
  • Mapping of routes to qualifications with certificates.
  • Management of all necessary resources for trainers, participants, materials and hotels.
  • Reportings according to the organisational structure.
  • Billing of courses and events with fees via an interface to an external system.
  • Automatic registration of continuing education credits after completion of course/event with the insurance education institution Berufsbildungswerk der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft e.V.

“The self-service functions such as booking or cancelling training units with the follow-up processes mean noticeable savings for us in comparison with how things used to be” according to Thomas Marschall. “The fully-automatic registration of continuing education credits with the German vocational further training database gut beraten is also a real competitive advantage.”

Marschall and his team are thrilled by the over 100,000 bookings of the various offers – and the now over 250,000 registered credit points for further training.
