Sorting Guideline

1 Requirements

At the time being, several methods to sort objects are implemented:

  • Sorting objects by numbers in dot-zero style (1.0, 2.0, ...), e.g. in categories
  • Sorting objects by numbers in ten-steps (10, 20, ...), e.g. in new exercise module (4.1)
  • Sorting objects by up- and down-arrows, e.g. in tests
  • ...
But the kind of sorting and ordering of objects in ILIAS should be unified to improve usability and reduce maintenance costs.

For all existing and new sorting features, sorting by numbers in ten-steps should be used. Advantages are:
  • Easy and effective to use
  • Unlike dot-zero style it does not make people think that a 2.1 makes an object a sub-object of 2.0.

2 Guideline

  • Sorting of items in ILIAS should be done at least by number inputs using multiples of 10.

5 Discussion

JF 31 May 2010: We prefer to use the "10", "20", ... solution whenever possible. In the future we should try to implement this per drag and drop.
