Embed questions in learning modules

1 Description

Like in the SCORM editor it should be possible to embed questions for self assessment into learning modules. The feature will need Javascript support.

The feature has multiple implementation levels:
  1. Re-use of existing SCORM Javascript implementation for questions (only client side - no communication). If you navigate to a page that contains questions, the state will always be the same (unanswered). (currently covered by funding).
  2. Implement communication back to the server (store, e.g. points or answers).
  3. Implement reporting/evaluation/statistics.
  4. Use results for navigation (only show next chapter if a number of questions has been answered correctly).
Combining text and/or media with one or several test questions is necessary.
So it should be possible to integrate test questions directly into learning modules.

The function should be able in the future to:
  • utilize existing questions from existing question pools
  • response directly results of the test question, e.g. wrong/right or standard solution or insertion of an advice (hint) about possible answers
  • storage results from all test questions in the learning module for learners and lecturers (like in the test and assessment module)
  • integrate questions, which were realized within the existing Ilias-plugin-concept

4 Discussion

Oli Lang (PHTG), Dec 15. 2009: "The function should be able to storage results from all test questions in the learning module for learners and lecturers (like in the test and assessment module)". In this case we would prefer a solution that e.g. allows to list the "participants data" (including the function "pass details") or the "statistic" ("evaluation for all users" incl. "show detailed evaluation") - according to the test module. The evaluation data which is generated by the scorm module is not very detailed; it is enough for "pure" self assessments but we would like to combine the content with an testing option.

JF, 08 Mar 2010: We still need funding for a sound implementation of this feature! If you are able to support us, please contact the coordination team (Alex Killing and Matthias Kunkel).

JF 22 Mar 2010: We will continue to discuss the feature on the next JF and make a plan how far we want to go with 4.1.

Sonja Burgauer (9th April 2010):
We postponed the Mahara-Interface, so we could fund a part with the "interface"-money.
But we would need the third implementation level; implement reporting/evaluation/statistics. See also Oli Lang's comment above.
We would need (as a first step) at least a basic level of statistics and tracking.
We have to group questions by topic.
We would also like to utilize existing questions from existing question pools. (priority, but not as high as stats/reporting).

This could be done in a further step, it's needed, but not top priority:
- response directly results of the test question, e.g. wrong/right or standard solution or insertion of an advice (hint) about possible answers
- integrate questions, which were realized within the existing Ilias-plugin-concept

5 Follow-up

Improvement and further development of this feature is discusses in:

Caspar Noetzli (Jan 04, 2011)

The following three issues keeps us from using the new «embeded questions»-feature in our learning-objects:

1. We would like to have another «mode» for all question-types, where
the number of tries is unlimited. The author should be able to enter "0"
(zero) in the field "Anzahl Versuche". In this mode there should be no
automatic feedback counting the number of tries

2. We would like to choose, between a.) displaying an automatic feedback
("Alle Antworten korrekt") b.) displaying an automatic feedback and an
individual feedback (as it is at the moment) and c.) new, and most
important for us: displaying *only* an individual feedback

3. It's great to have the option to integrate images in feedbacks via the
rich-text editor. Unfortunately the image are not shown in the feedbacks at the moment and the rich-text editor for feedbacks does not appear in some question types.

Caspar Noetzli (Jan 12, 2011)

Questiontype "HotSpots"
  • Good to see, that this question-type allows multiple-hot spots. It would be nice to have this feature in the test-module as well.
  • Feature request: We would like to have another "mode" in this question-type, where the hot-spots are not shown to the user as he or she moves the cursor over the image. Then user can place a "pin" by clicking on the image. (The pin should be movable and deletable). The solution is correct if a user sets his pin within the (invisible) hotspot defined by the author.

Examples of questions where such a "pin" could be usefull:
  • The image shows a map of a country, the user has to put the pin to mark the geografical position of the capital city.
  • The an x-ray image of a body part. The medical student has to put pins to mark regions in the image that show abnormality

Matthias Kunkel, 28 April 2011:
Embedding questions in learning module pages can only be used for self-assessment. There is no possibility for a tutor to review/rate the answers. Therefore, it does not make sense to offer a question type like essay question when you cannot offer a feedback to it. I strongly recommend to remove this test type in general.
