With every new release, ILIAS gets a bit better... a bit clearer... a bit closer to what you need on a day-to-day basis. ILIAS 11 is no exception: lots of new functions and improvements mean that the platform is more flexible, understandable and efficient. A real community project – developed with and by you.

For a quarter of a century now, ILIAS has stood for dependable, innovative and community-developed digital learning.
For the 25th International ILIAS Conference, we will be returning on 9th and 10th of September 2026 to the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, the very place where ILIAS's conference history began.
It is time to celebrate 25 years of development, the exchanging of ideas and the shaping of the future.

32,000 user accounts and countless courses, from training programmes to compulsory training. Can a single platform cope with all that? At the SV SparkassenVersicherung[1] the solution is called 'LEOS' and is based on ILIAS. To find out more, we spoke to Tobias Höfler from the SV Academy.

Three days before the official release of ILIAS 10, The PHBern (Bern University of Teacher Education) updated their learning platform, core functions and plugins, to ILIAS 10. How was that possible? We were certainly curious and therefore decided to ask Kirstin Niggeler, the service manager for ILIAS at PHBern, directly.

The 44th ILIAS Development Conference gave the international ILIAS community it's first opportunity to gather together for a major event in the venerable university town of Marburg. Almost 90 members of the community met on the 10th and 11th of September 2025 to find out about the latest ILIAS development trends. The conference got off to a dignified start, being opened by the vice president of the university, Prof. Dr. Yvonne Zimmermann, followed by the awarding of the ILIAS Community Award 2025 to Fabian Schmid.

Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) relies on a combination of Stud.IP and ILIAS to organise digital teaching and learning processes. Cornelis Kater is part of the e-learning team (ZQS/elsa) and not only has many years of experience, but also a clear vision for open, future-proof educational platforms. In this interview, he explains how the systems at LUH complement each other, what developments are currently underway - and also takes a look at the political framework conditions surrounding open source at universities.

ILIAS... but even quicker, safer and more attractive – is that even possible?
Yes! It is possible, because ILIAS 10 has landed! A host of new features and code improvements will be sure to set our users' hearts a flutter! So let's have a look at them together and get ready to fall in love with ILIAS 10!

More and more schools are using digital learning platforms such as ILIAS. They became increasingly important during the Covid-19 pandemic. In many places it is now difficult to imagine doing without them. At the Clara-Schumann-Gymasium (CSG), a grammar school in Holzwickede, Germany, ILIAS has been an integral part of everyday school life for years now. Jörg Meyer is a teacher, sixth form coordinator, and the person responsible for digitalisation at the school. He has kindly agreed to answer a few questions for our blog and to give us an idea of how ILIAS is used in a school environment, and what advantages it offers teachers and pupils.

Two days of ILIAS conference. Over 60 sessions, 100 speakers, almost 300 participants, about 50 who followed along online. And two topics that overshadowed everything else: open source software and artificial intelligence. But it wasn't only the technological side that played a role. It was about more. About community. About the future. About openness. And about opportunities and prospects.

This article is, as you may have gathered from the title, about ILIAS at Learntec. I thought, however, that it might be interesting for you to get a personal perspective of this interesting annual event in the ILIAS calendar - a behind-the-scenes look, so to speak. This is my second year helping out at the ILIAS stand - which makes me a newbie, for ILIAS has been taking part in Karlsruhe's annual trade fair on the topic of education and learning since 1999! 

This year, the ILIAS community will be meeting on the 5th and 6th of June for our annual ILIAS Conference - this time in the heart of Berlin in the stylish Villa Elizabeth, a mere stone's throw from the main train station. It is hard to imagine a more central and beautiful location. This year, we will be presenting, learning and networking amid classical elegance and a green park.

ILIAS is an open source learning platform that is continuously being developed by an active community. The project is based on the contribution of ideas and requirements from real users.

Anyone can help plan and shape the software. Anyone who has an idea for a new function can suggest it directly - even without any prior technical knowledge.

In this how-to, we describe step by step how it works. By submitting a feature request, anyone can contribute to the further development of ILIAS.

Digital training is playing an increasingly important role - also in the area of medicine. But how does one go about efficiently organising online training for tens of thousands of participants? At the ärztlichen Akademie für Fort- und Weiterbildung in Nordrhein, deputy managing director Kathrin Hildebrand and her team rely on ILIAS. In this conversation, she tells us why the academy switched from Moodle to ILIAS, how they combine online and classroom formats, and what their plans for the future are.

The Call for Participation for the 24^th International ILIAS Conference is open!

The International ILIAS Conference is the most important event of the year in the ILIAS community. At 05 and 06 September 2024, the ILIAS Conference comes to Austria for the first time. Our hosts will be the axtesys GmbH and the NexxaCon GmbH in Graz.
We would like to invite all ILIAS users, and all those who are interested in e-learning generally, to actively help shape the programme for the 23rd ILIAS Conference. Submit your programme contributions, your knowledge, know-how and expertise, and share it with your ILIAS colleagues and friends.

The 22^nd International ILIAS conference took place on the 7^th and 8^th September 2023 at the University of Cologne, bringing our community back to the place where everything began – 25 years after the first version of ILIAS went live.
